History

Gugge 2000 was formed over 10 years ago in November 1998, by Dave Brewer (still our Musical Director) & other former members of bands from the Bournemouth area.

They were keen to create a type of performing band never before seen in the UK. They wanted to make people listen, tap their feet, join in and create an atmosphere of music and fun for all to enjoy.

Inspired by the Guggenmusik bands they had seen on a trip to Fasnacht carnival in Lucerne and the subsequent visit of Swiss band ‘Qua Quager’, from Triengen, to Bournemouth the group decided that it was GUGGENMUSIK that they would unleash on unsuspecting British audiences!

So in the midst of an English winter (rain & more rain) they began to meet on Friday nights, about eight to ten of them at first. The group grew bigger as the word spread and soon they had to move to larger premises to rehearse.

Of course after meeting the group were rewarded with refreshment at the local hostelry where the discussions and ideas continued to grow.

As news spread the band began to receive requests to perform and as they performed audiences seemed to enjoy & our numbers grew to the band of over 40 persons we see today and, as they often say .......the rest is history!

We are proud to have celebrated our tenth year as Britain’s First Guggenmusik Band in 2008!!

How times change – 9 people attended our first rehearsal and now registered members top 45!! When we started most of our percussion was borrowed, begged and stolen (OK, not stolen, but you get the idea). Now the band owns kit worth well over £5000. We’re no longer the only Guggenmusik band in the UK with our friends Frumptarn having joined our quest to bring Guggenmusik to the UK in 2004.

Trips abroad have become regular features of our calendar with visits to Switzerland three times, Germany three times, Austria, France & Spain twice. Crumbs, we’ve visited Wales as well (does that count as abroad?)

2008 saw a special celebration year with BIG F 08 in July and a visit to our friends Chaos Guggen in Plochingen in November plus new gigs in Worcester, Tetbury and Hyde Park.

Our home

The home of Gugge 2000 is in Bournemouth, Dorset on the south coast of England. Bournemouth is a seaside resort where many English people come to take a holiday in the summer along with many international students who come to our many language schools to study English.

We practise on Friday evenings about 30 weeks per year at Bournemouth University located located between Bournemouth and Poole about two miles from the sea on the A3049. Please contact us for further info.

Bournemouth is twinned with Lucerne in Switzerland  & our bands logo as seen on our flag represents Bournemouth’s pier combined with the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne.

Costume

Unlike most other Guggenmusik bands we have retained basically the same costume throughout our history. We have our core colours of yellow & black and some of our audiences recognise us as the black & yellow band.

We have adapted our costume for our various trips and 2009 saw us as bees whilst in Lucerne. Our costume is bright & colourful & designed to reflect our desire to make music fun. See photos of us here.

Members (For a full list of members click here)

Currently Gugge 2000 has a membership of over 40 who range in age from less than 10 years old to over 60 years young.

We have a strong family connection including more than seven married couples,  3 sets of parents with children in the band & even one family with 3 generations as members!!

Our members are drawn from all walks of life including a plumber, a nurse, taxi driver, bus driver, shop keeper, sales representative, an artist & a train driver. We all share one passion – our love of Guggenmusik!!

Repertoire

Gugge 2000 currently has a repertoire of over 60 different numbers of which 40 are actively being played in 2009.

The range includes popular Guggenmusik like ‘Insanity’ & ‘Schlurfi’ but also includes a broad spectrum of musical styles & tastes ranging from ‘Phantom of the Opera’ to ‘Lolloipop by Mika’.

We also play modern numbers including ‘Basketcase’ and even a tune by Elbow! We play great rock anthems like 'Rock U', tunes from films like 'Summer Nights' from Grease & many many more. For our current list click here.

Our Vision

We want our Band to recreate an authentic Guggenmusik style and for that style to provide musical expression, enjoyment & lots of fun for our members & for our audiences. We also hope that we prove worthy ambassadors of Guggenmusik & help to spread this musical style in the UK.
