History
Gugge 2000 was formed in November 1998, by Dave Brewer (still
our Musical Director) & other former members of bands from the Bournemouth
area.
They were keen to create a type of performing band never
before seen in the UK. They wanted
to make people listen, tap their feet, join in and create an atmosphere of music
and fun for all to enjoy.
Inspired by the Guggenmusik bands they had seen on a trip to
Fasnacht carnival in Lucerne and the subsequent visit of Swiss band ‘Qua
Quager’, from Triengen, to Bournemouth the group decided that it was
GUGGENMUSIK that they would unleash on unsuspecting British audiences!
So in the midst of an English winter (rain & more
rain) they began to meet on Friday nights, about eight to ten of them at first.
The group grew bigger as the word spread and soon they had to move to larger
premises to rehearse.
Of course after meeting the group were rewarded with
refreshment at the local hostelry where the discussions and ideas continued to
grow.
As news spread the band
began to receive requests to perform and as they performed audiences seemed to
enjoy & our numbers grew to the band of over 40 persons we see today and, as
they often say .......the rest is history!

Our home
The home of Gugge 2000 is in Bournemouth, Dorset on the
south coast of England. Bournemouth is a seaside resort where many English
people come to take a holiday in the summer along with many international
students who come to our many language schools to study English.
We practise on Friday evenings about 30 weeks per year at
Streetwise safety centre located in the north of Bournemouth about five miles from the
sea. The Streetwise Safety Centre is a registered charity set up to help
children learn about how to live & have fun in the world but stay safe at
all times. We hope that our hire of their facilities helps this charity to
continue their good work.
Bournemouth is twinned with Lucerne in Switzerland
& our bands logo as seen on our flag represents Bournemouth’s pier
combined with the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne.
Costume
Unlike most other Guggenmusik bands we have retained
basically the same costume throughout our history. We have our core colours of
yellow & black and some of our audiences recognise us as the black &
yellow band.
We have a winter & summer costume but both costumes
are black & yellow. Our winter costume is dark & mysterious with black
face masks whilst our summer costume is bright & colourful & designed to
reflect our desire to make music fun.
See photos of us here.
